Council Highlights
Swimming, sewage, and a new wellness spot on Elm Street. Quite a mix at city hall lately.
More Swim Passes Coming Your Way
If you or your kids use the YMCA swim program, it's sticking around a little longer. Council topped up the funding by $63,000 after the original $100,000 ran out, driven by strong demand since the program launched in 2024. Over 4,100 swim passes have been issued so far, along with nearly 500 people taking lessons.

Wellness Centre Proposed for Elm Street
A counselling and wellness clinic could be coming to the corner of Elm Street and Morrison Drive, if a zoning change gets approved. The existing building at 358 Elm would be reused for the clinic and offices, with the parking lot next door kept for the site. If you want to weigh in, a public meeting is set for June 8.

Where Your Trash Goes Could Change
The Green Lane landfill near Southwold, where St. Thomas sends its garbage, could hit capacity by 2035, though that timeline is still being worked out. Toronto is reviewing its long-term waste plans and looking at options like expanding the site or building an energy-from-waste facility. For now, your access to the landfill is protected under existing agreements while the bigger picture gets sorted.

Transit Funding Takes Pressure Off Your Bus Fare
St. Thomas is getting just over $418,000 from the province this year to help keep public transit running. Most of it, $271,000, goes straight toward operating costs, which helps keep pressure off riders and taxpayers. The rest goes into a reserve for future bus purchases down the road.

Highbury Avenue Could Become the Province's Problem
That 2.5 km stretch of Highbury Avenue between Highway 3 and Ron McNeil Line is expensive to maintain, and widening it to four lanes could cost around $150 million by 2035 to 2040. Council voted to ask the province to take it back, which would shift that financial weight off your tax bill and development charges. The city has already flagged the Ministry of Transportation, and also looped in London and Elgin County.

City Chasing $172 Million in Federal Money for Wastewater
Council backed a funding application asking the federal government for $172 million to help pay for upgrades to the Dalewood Water Reclamation Facility. The money would come from a new $51 billion federal infrastructure program, and the city needs to move fast since only shovel-ready projects qualify. Getting this funding could also help make the future recreation facility more affordable for your community.
